“He Doesn’t Need to Be Fixed” – A Sibling Who Sees More Than You Think

Content Note: Ableism

To Camp Staff,

My little brother came home upset after camp.
He’s autistic. That’s not the problem.
The problem is, people running the camp don’t know what that actually means.

When he asked for a quiet space, he was told to “wait a bit.”
When he got excited and was jumping, someone pulled him aside for ‘disrupting’.
When my asked why he was asked to sit out, they said, “We’re just trying to manage the group.”

My brother wants to build robots and play capture the flag.
He wants to be with other kids.
Not supervised or distracted off to the side or followed around.
Not “given a break.”
Not watched like a baby.

Here’s what would help:

  • Let him stim.

  • Let him step away without punishment.

  • Let other kids get to know him.

He doesn’t need to change to fit in.
The program should change for him.

Thanks,
A sibling who sees more than you think
